The Pillar of Purpose- Pastor Brinson Barker - 7/20/008

I. Introduction

The message today is to help equip & mobilize you to reach people in your world where you live everyday.

• The pillar we will be talking about today has the potential to radically transform your life from mere existence and boredom into a life of adventure
• When you understand your purpose on earth it will cause you to be a stable others can come to
• Have you ever asked yourself,
Why on earth am I here? What am I here for?
• We need to run what we are doing through the question: Why am I doing this?
• Busyness often creeps in and distracts us from even thinking about why in the world we are here
• If we are not careful time will slip through our hands and we will look back over our lives and wonder if we ever fulfilled our God given purpose
Purpose-something one intends to get or do; intention; aim - resolution; determination - the object for which something exists or is done; with a specific end in view – not accidentally; by design on purpose (Webster’s New World Dictionary)
True Purpose is an intentional aim and doesn’t occur accidentally

• You will never drift into your purpose it must be intentional
Where purpose is not known (or forgotten) abuse is inevitable – Dr. Myles Monroe

• When we fail to discover our purpose we will abuse ourselves and others
• The reason why people are pursuing drugs, affairs, and other things is because they don’t know or have forgotten their purpose
• The saddest most miserably depressed people are not the sick, homeless, broke but those that don’t have a purpose or have forgotten their purpose

• Often people run in the direction were everybody else is headed, we can’t afford to do that anymore
Proverbs 29:18 (KJV) Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth
the law, happy is he.
Proverbs 29:18a (GW) without prophetic vision people run wild
• The question of purpose has brought much confusion because people look in the wrong place to find it, themselves!

In order to discover my purpose I need to know who gave it and how I can discover it?

Col 1:15-16 15 We look at this Son and see the God who cannot be seen. We look at this Son and see God's original purpose in everything created. 16 For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible, rank after rank after rank of angels—everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him

I have been created by God, on purpose, and for a purpose

My purpose can only be discovered in the God that created me and in the Words that He left me

When I know God’s purpose for my life I put on God glasses and see circumstances, people, and the world through his eyes or perspective

• Lost hope to dream – God has a big dream and you have specific assignment and aim
• Hope can only be restored through a purpose resurrection
• Remember when you had a dream of reaching your work place, school, home, family, city, and nation and some didn’t want to hear or fear crept in & you stopped?
Transition: If we are going to fulfill our purpose we first need to understand some of the enemies of purpose– think which enemies have crept into my life

I. The Enemies of Purpose
• These enemies often rob us of our purpose through thoughts, ideas, and suggestions

a. Selfishness
Philippians 2:20-21 (AMP) For I have no one like him [no one of so kindred a spirit] who will be so genuinely interested in your welfare and devoted to your interests. 21 For the others all seek [to advance] their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ (the Messiah).
• You are not anointed to solve your own problems but often you get your answer while ministering to others
God sends no one away empty except those who are full of themselves
D.L Moody

b. Feelings
• I allow the way I am feeling to prevent me from being obedient to Jesus in that moment he speaks
• My feelings are not a reliable safe guide they change like the weather
• The purpose of Jesus will always stay the same regardless
• A feel uncomfortable at times but there is blessing on the other side

• One problem long-term Christians have is that they forget how hopeless it felt to be without Christ – Rick Warren

• What kind of feelings, Feelings of Comparison or Jealousy
2 Corinthians 10:12b (AMP) However, when they measure themselves with themselves and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding and behave unwisely.
• Feelings of Inadequacies
• Giving into feelings of inadequacies is a sign of failure to understand from the scriptures, who you are in Christ

Let this be the testimony or our lives…
Acts 13:36a (NIV) “For when David had served God's purpose in his own generation

Transition: We often focus on the mystery of God’s vision or purpose for our lives rather than his purpose for us that has been clearly revealed in scripture

II. Three Big Ideas about God’s Purposes for our life?

• The best place in scripture to discover our purpose is by looking into the life of Jesus
• Jesus is the greatest example to reveal to us our purpose
• If you are ever in question about your purpose look into the life of Jesus
Matthew 9:35-38 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people

Acts 10:38 "how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

• Jesus lived his life to put a smile on God’s face and so should we
• The women that was bowed over for 18 years was loosed - Luke 13:10-17

Pillar Purpose Scripture
Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus said to him “`You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ “ This is the first and great commandment. “This is the first and great commandment. “And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.` “On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

Transition: These purposes are things you can do at any point or age in life- retired, school age, college, starting career, etc…

A. God’s purpose is for relationship! – (this is the place where purpose is ignited)

God created you with the purpose of being with him
• Jesus modeled this relationship with his relationship with God
• He simply did what he did so he can be with you
• God lost fellowship in the garden reunited through Christ (Gospel)
Story: Martin Luther King Jr. Was in kitchen after family was asleep and he got a call that said I am going to take your life and your families. He was afraid and said to the Lord I have preached your kingdom and justice all over the world, all over America. I have been in church all my life and I am afraid and don’t believe I have ever heard you say my name. Silence, Martin cries – Silence – Never alone Martin, Never alone I will never leave you
Is 43:1b (NIV) "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
Is 43:4 That's how much you mean to me! That's how much I love you! I'd sell off the whole world to get you back, trade the creation just for you.
James 4:5 (KJV) Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? Lusteth - intensely crave possession (earnestly) desire (greatly), (greatly) long (after),
James 4:5b (Msg) "he's a fiercely jealous lover."

• When I understand he yearns and desires to be with me my response is that I want to love him with everything I have
Philip 3:10a (Amp) [For my determined purpose is] that I may know Him

Transitional sentence: Understanding God’s purpose for a close relationship with us causes us to burn with His purpose for People

B. God’s purpose is for people & the world!

Luke 19:10 (NKJV) 10 "for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."
John 3:16 for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish but have everlasting life

We were born on purpose for a purpose to reach people

We reach people through serving people

Matthew 20:28 28 "just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."
• Our family slogan we need to ask others and ourselves is - How can I help you?!?!

*******God wants us to simply just open our eyes slow down and be more mindful of others than ourselves******

Friends of Jesus tell their friends about Jesus
I have often seen him come downstairs in the morning after spending several hours in prayer, with his eyes swollen with weeping. He would soon introduce the subject of his anxiety by saying, “I am a broken-hearted man; yes, indeed, I am an unhappy man; not for myself, but on account of others. God has given me such a sight of the value of precious souls that I cannot live if souls are not saved. Oh give me souls, or else I die!”
Life of John Smith- From Passion for Souls by Oswald J. Smith

Everyday over 200,000 people die that is about 2.5 every second

Luke 19:13b (KJV) Occupy till I come.
Luke 19:13b (NAS) 'Do business with this until I come back.'

• I have a job and a assignment and I must take ownership of my world as if I am others lifeline to heaven

You are responsible for doing business with resources that you have been entrusted with on earth

I have been put on this earth not to occupy space, but to change the world!

The purpose of me coming to church, home church, meetings, etc is not just to grow closer to Jesus and others but for me to change my world that he has assigned me to

III. Conclusion

• God wants a response today from us!
• What is the Holy Spirit dealing with you about today?
• Have you forgotten your purpose? Do you need to make a fresh commitment to the Lord today?
Verdict: God break our hearts for people in our relationship with Jesus, expose these enemies of purpose when they begin to creep in and cause us to just slow down and look for opportunities to share God’s love.
